Through the Acorn app we’re able to support businesses that make our communities thrive. Everyday we learn more about our activity partners and their inspiring efforts to enrich the wellbeing of children and families. Today, we're featuring Will Lacey, Owners of Activ Camps, London.
1. Please tell us a little about yourself and Activ Camps
Name: Will Lacey
Speciality: We provide non-stop fun for children across South London during their holidays, exposing them to new levels of adventure and entirely new experiences. We also run innovative and inclusive variations of traditional games and sports, giving children the opportunity to escape the pressure of any negative experiences or stereotypes that they may previously hold.
When the business was started: The very first Activ Camps was held over the summer of 2004. Although the 20-30 children who turned up each day had a blast, it was nothing like the non-stop fun we provide these days for up to 600 children a day!
Where you are based: This summer we'll be operating across seven in South West London and, at the end of the summer, crossing that invisible line in to South East London right by Brockwell Park.
2. What motivates you to do host camps for kids?
Activ Camps is all about providing children with happy holiday memories in a safe, inclusive, active and fun environment. It is also about supporting families from within our own community during those long holidays, providing a trusted and competitively priced child care option. Managing to do this day in, day out during the holidays is what really motivates us!
3. Tell us about a favourite moment teaching
There have been many special moments, but a recent one was whilst stood on the brilliantly bright and bouncy 'King of the Mountain' inflatable, and over-hearing a young girl on her first day of camp bouncing round and round chanting "Best Day Ever, Best Day Ever, Best Day Ever...".
4. You teach innovative versions of traditional games and sports, what are these like?
Small teams and fast paced games, where everyone plays a part. Points for teamwork, points for fantastic attitudes, points for cheering and points for funny team names. Not just points for winning. No waiting around and no long queues.
5. Do you have any new projects or exciting things we should know about?
We've recently opened up the option of an After Camp Club at some of our venues for working parents who struggle to reach us by 1730.
