Through the Acorn app we’re able to support businesses that make our communities thrive. Everyday we learn more about our activity providers and their inspiring efforts to enrich the wellbeing of children and families. Today, we're featuring Allie Ticktin, Founder of Play 2 Progress, CA.
1. Please tell us a little about Play 2 Progress
We're a play-based learning center. We build skills for the journey through childhood using the power of play. Play 2 Progress was started in the Summer, 2017, in Los Angeles, California.
2. What motivates you to support children through therapeutic classes? What services do you offer?
We truly believe that each child is unique, with his/her own ability to succeed and become a powerful force in this world. Our role is to give children and their parents the skills to help them access their strengths. There is nothing greater than watching a child gain the confidence to achieve something that was previously difficult for them. We offer a variety of services from parent support and coaching to Mommy & Me, Kindergarten Readiness, Coordination Groups, Social Emotional and Regulation groups and sensory-based camps. We also offer individual sensory integration sessions and school consults. Our goal is to help each child achieve the highest level of success while having fun!
3**. Tell us about a favourite moment teaching**
This may seem like a bit of a silly moment, but sometimes the smallest moments make the biggest change! For us, the relationship between a child and parent is so powerful; when we can see a parent have a parenting “aha” moment, it is truly incredible. In Mommy & Me classes, we introduce the power of sensory play and move through the sensory system with our parents and their babies. For many parents, allowing themselves or their child to explore and get messy is difficult. They just want to jump for the wipes!
This was the case for one parent and her daughter had learned to refuse all messy play. We convinced the mother to have fun and get messy while playing with wet oats and finger paint while her daughter stood by and watched. Then, all of a sudden, her daughter grabbed the finger paint, put it on her hands, and ran to her mom to do her makeup in paint! By the end of the class, all the toddlers were following her lead and getting messy with their moms!
4. Who is eligible for your sessions?
We work with kids from birth (in Mommy & Me classes!) all the way up to about 8 years old. Different sessions are for different populations, but with classes that range from Toddler Sensory Movement, Music, Children’s Yoga, Sensory Integration sessions, we have something for just about everyone!
5. Do you have any new projects or exciting things we should know about?
We’re starting to work with a few other organizations to offer an even broader range of classes and sessions at Play 2 Progress. From childbirth education classes to singalong music and dance classes to chess camps over the summer, check out our website for more details and announcements!
